Default Help needed setting black and white level

Hi Guys,

I have been playing around with controlcal, colorhcfr and my spyder3elite for the last couple of days. I think I have made quite a few good improvements, but my luminance graph is always of and gamma is messed up always.
(The readings are attached as images)

I think the problem is I don't know how to set the contrast and brightness exactly. From what I have read (GREYSCALE & COLOUR CALIBRATION FOR DUMMIES), direct view displays, such as my Pioneer PDP-LX5080D should have a light output of 30-40 ftL. I am using the AVS HD 709 Calibration patterns, the colorhfcr windows set specifically.

Using the White Clipping patterns, I can turn the contrast up to max. the light output is well over 40 ftL then. I knock the contrast back down, so that the ligh output is around 39 ftL. Is this the correct way of doing it?
The bars from 230 to 235 flash in that case.

The brightness I have tried at max +1 to a minimum of -1. This looks good with the Black Clipping pattern.

I am at a loss as well as to at wich setting the pure cinema settings (on p2) etc... all should be. I know color space should be 2 and color temp should be 6.

With the current results, I do see a major difference, only skintones look bland.

Could someone help me getting started up?

In ISFccc, I wouldn't have the Contrast Control over 40.

For a referenced enviroment with light control, try targeting around 32fL.

What pattern source (including player if any) are you using and size? Is this for a HDMI Input?

I am using the AVS HD 709 MP4 files. I use windows media player to play these files.

My set-up is as follows:

HP laptop, hdmi cable connected to my home-cinema receiver (namely TEAC DG500), hdmi cable to input 3 hdmi connector of the Pioneer plasma.

The pioneer plasma is configured as an extended desktop to my laptop. So have colorhcfr, controlcal running on my normal laptop desktop and the patterns are displayed on the extended desktop, the pioneer plasma.

(Thnx for your quick reply's, as allways )

Is your Pioneer's HDMI input (HDMI 3) configured as Video?

Have you verified your PC's HDMI output is properly configured and outputting correctly? Many variables there.

What size are the patterns (actual window size)?

How can I verify this. I don't see any option in controlcal or in the pioneers settings

I think it is correctly outputting everything.

On the 50 inch screen of the Pioneer I am using the Colorhcfr windows patterns. The pattern on the screen is shown as 16,8 inch wide and 9,4 inches high.

By the way, wat should the settings be on P2 of the controlcal profile screen? Colortemp should be 6, colorspace should be 2 and...?

Thanks again for responding.

I checked it all again and the signal is indeed set to video.
I again redid the calibration and came out at a flatter gamma. But is still dips at 60% white and shoots up at 80% white. Can't figure out how to flatten it further. The grayscale tracks quite flat, all delta E under 1,5.

I will be posting my results later today.
